Romeo and Juliet is Enjoy the Traffic’s second post for its food-and-art blog project. Our first post was a delightful cake inspired by the classic novel Jane Eyre and its author Charlotte Brontë. This new post is in honor of William Shakespeare (1564-1616) the English poet and playwright regarded as the greatest writer in the English language, and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragic romance written during Shakespeare's early career. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime and one of his most frequently performed plays. Shakespeare’s use of his poetic dramatic structure has been praised as an early sign of his creative skill. Romeo and Juliet has been adapted numerous times for stage, film, musical and opera venues.
In Brazil we have a delicious snack called Romeo and Juliet. We pair a slice of Minas cheese (also called fresh cheese) with a slice of guava paste. To recreate the dish here in the USA you can buy the guava paste and queso fresco in any latino market. Unfortunately it won’t be quite the same, because the Brazilian fresh cheese has a mild taste compared to mexican queso fresco, which will alter the flavor of this snack. It will taste great, but it will not be the same experience you will get from eating the fresh guava paste with fresh cheese from Brazil.

Why not substitute the fig for guava and add some delicious (easy-to find) cheese and make it Enjoy the Traffic's Romeo and Juliet appetizer adaptation? A toast to William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet and the hope that love will always conquer tragedies.
